Popular Sesame Street Characters |
 |
Elmo is a furry red monster with googly eyes and an orange nose who lives on Sesame Street. The character is self-described as 3-and-a-half years old, and refers to himself almost entirely in the third person. As with many children of his age, he is seen somewhat infrequently with a favorite toy of his: an orange monster-like doll named David. Elmo lives with his mommy, his daddy, and, in some storybooks, a sister named Daisy. |

Big Bird is an 8-foot, 2-inch yellow bird who lives on Sesame Street. Since Sesame Street premiered in 1969, Big Bird has entertained millions of pre-school children and their parents with his wide-eyed wondering at the world. Big Bird helps children feel all right about not knowing everything because he himself does not know everything, and encourages them to inquire: a common Big Bird phrase in recent years has been "Asking questions is a good way of finding things out!" He also teaches other life, alphabet, and numerical lessons: "I guess it's better to be who you are. Turns out people like you best that way, anyway."

The most famous Snuffleupagus on Sesame Street is known as Mr. Snuffleupagus, or Snuffy, although his full name is Aloysius Snuffleupagus. Snuffleupagus has a large trunk, similar to an elephant's trunk, called a "snuffle." The snuffle is a Snuffleupagus' most important and versatile appendage. It is used for lifting small items, feeding, hugging, quick-blow-drying, waving, performing puppets, playing musical instruments and conducting musical arrangements.

Abby Cadabby is an inquisitive 3-year-old fairy-in-training who has just moved to Sesame Street from Fairyside, Queens. She is learning magic but is not quite proficient yet and has a propensity for turning things into pumpkins with her "training wand." Abby loves to practice her magic and rhyming, but what she finds truly amazing and magical is what she discovers on Sesame Street; such as learning to count and drawing a letter with a crayon.
